Hip Hop Fashion of the 80's and 90's

About Hip Hop Fashion

Hip Hop has had its own iconic style since the early 80's and 90's and has undergone some radical changes through the years. In the 1980's sports brands attached themselves to the hip-hop scene and names such as Adidas, Kangol and Puma rose to fame by being seen on the top artists of that time. Bright coloured tracksuits, patterned sweaters, leather bomber jackets and sheepskin coats were popular with men and women and the band Run DMC was at the forefront of fashion in those early days.

Desginer Prestige

Designers such as Louis Vuitton, Fendi and Gucci got in on the trend and started to produce tracksuits, jackets and fur coats. Girl group Salt N' Pepa made hip hop fashion feminine and wore some of the most memorable clothes of the decade. Denim jackets, jeans and cut off shorts were popular within the group and were usually in a classic acid wash. Oversized t-shirts with bright designs or cartoon characters were worn with ripped jeans and accessorised with huge door knocker earrings and chains. The girls kept the look glamourous with curled and dyed hair and bold makeup leading the way for female stars in the 90s like Aaliyah and Missy Elliot.

Fashion in the 90's changed dramatically and more expensive and luxurious clothing was starting to be worn by artists. Baggy fit jeans, sports bras, crop tops and large flannel shirts were worn by the girls while male stars and fans went for printed silk shirts, patterned jackets and snapbacks. Tommy Hilfiger, Timberland and Baby Phat were some of the most popular brands in hip-hop fashion in the 90's and platinum jewellery replaced the thick gold of the 80's.

Style Tips

To mix some cool hip-hop style into your wardrobe a vintage sports sweater would look great with some ripped skinny jeans and chunky jewellery. Cut off denim shorts are a great choice for summer paired with some classic white sneakers and an oversized t-shirt.
